Board of Fire Commissioners

Meet Your Elected Officials

Our Board of Fire Commissioners is an elected body of seven members who are charged with the business and affairs of the District. Fire Commissioners serve a term of four years. All Board meetings are held the second Monday of every month at Station 3/Headquarters.

Maurice Gilbert

Maurice Gilbert

SWFD Fire Board Chairperson  /  Board Seat 1  /  Term - 2016 - 2020

With a formal education in Accounting, Business Administration and Law, Commissioner Gilbert spent over 20 years in mortgage banking. In 1995, he moved fulltime to South Walton and became a Real Estate Broker.  Seeing the need for improvement in fire and emergency medical services in South Walton, he became a Fire Commissioner in 1997.

South Walton will continue to grow and as this occurs, fire protection and emergency medical services must keep pace and actually precede the growth to properly protect our citizen's lives as well as their property. We must stay ahead of the growth curve by proper planning in a fiscally responsible manner.

Jack Abbit

Jack Abbit

SWFD Fire Board Vice-Chairperson  /  Board Seat 3  /  Term - 2016 - 2020

Commissioner Abbit retired from the Boeing Company after 38 years in the aerospace industry. Since that time, he has been very active in our community through the Cultural Arts Association, the Philharmonic Society of Northwest Florida, Taylor Arts Center and the Sandestin Lions Club. Commissioner Abbit has also been a member of the Walton County Cultural Planning Committee and Chairman of the South Walton Centennial Planning Committee. Several Sandestin Lions Club members had previously served as Commissioners on the South Walton Fire District Board of Fire Commissioners and with their support and after attending numerous Fire Board meetings, Commissioner Abbit decided that South Walton Fire District was a good fit for him.

Quality fire, rescue, transport and beach safety service in South Walton will continue to meet the needs and expectations of our citizens. As South Walton grows, it is incumbent on the District and its Commissioners to manage the business related costs and revenues to deliver these services at the lowest, reasonable cost to the taxpayers.

I consider South Walton Fire District to be one of the most progressive departments in this area. I believe SWFD can continue to provide excellent services while remaining one of the lowest taxing districts in the state. I envision SWFD continuing to grow with the community. It is a privilege to work alongside the men and women of SWFD.

My Dad was a firefighter all his working life and I have a lot of respect for the men and women who have chosen this profession. As our permanent population grows and visitors continue to come in record numbers, we must continue to attract the best firefighters, EMT's, and Paramedics. We must also expand our Beach Safety program.
